Bean paste can be easily shaped, does not deformed and able to last longer in hot and humid weather. Bean paste can also be repeatedly used, does not contain oil and easy to wash off. The paste is easy to make, just three ingredients, which are beans, water and sugar.
It also suitable for vegetarian and Muslim and health-conscious people.
Bean paste decoration does not go well with the usual butter cake as their respective taste clashes with each other, but we can use other flavors or ingredients to let the final combination be perfect, (eg. delicious and pretty). Other ingredients to consider can be milk, butter, almond flour, jam etc.
In Korea, bean paste is produced with different sugar ratio. But in other countries, as bean paste piping is uncommon, every pastry supplier will have their own different recipe for bean paste, and most of them are oil base beanpaste to made moon cake and kuih, however, for beanpaste piping, we required a water base beanpaste.
We can also use chestnut paste to replace bean paste. As long as the environment temperature is not an issue, you can pipe with buttercream too or even potato and sweet potato can be used for piping, as long as the stickiness of the texture is right, any food ingredient can be used for piping.

The most convenient bean paste is of course to purchase ready-made bean paste from the market, or we can purchase pre-made products to shorten the process in making the paste, otherwise making from scratch is also possible.

Using bean paste alone can be boring to the flavours. To match buttercream cake, we can mix other ingredients to enhance the flavours. However, do note that the mixture or ingredients added must be able to pass through the pipe or piping will fail.
Many beginners lacks the judgement in the amount of sugar and water used. In fact, it is important to note that the right amount of water used depends on many other factors such as environment temperature etc. Adding too much water will cause the shapes of the flowers to deform easily and if water is too little, the bean paste will be too hard, which will cause the petal to look ugly and stiff hands from piping the hard paste.
